Do I need additional insurance for my trip, as well as the University insurance?

Most people will not need additional insurance for their overseas trip. However, you will definitely need your own insurance policy if you are going to:

  • Take part in an extreme sport such as skiing or bungee jumping
  • Go on holiday to another country (for example, if you are on placement in Australia for a year and are planning to spend one of your holidays in New Zealand).

Additionally, you may need to take out their own insurance policy if you meet one of these criteria:

  • Those who are going to go on holiday before or after their placement/overseas business – the University will cover you for a short holiday proportionate to the length of your placement/business trip. So, for a placement of a year, you would be covered for a week or so holiday at the end, as long as it was in the same country as your placement
  • Those going for a semester or year abroad in the USA, Canada or Australia
  • Those with a pre-existing medical condition.
