If I report an incident of sexual violence or harassment, what will happen to others involved?

If you choose to speak to a Sexual Violence Liason Officer (SVLO), anything that you say will be kept private and confidential which means that if you choose to disclose the name of the accused to your SVLO, then they will keep that information confidential and they do not need to pass this information over without your consent.

However, there are some situations where they may not be able to keep confidentiality and may need to escalate your case. In such situations, the SVLO will let you know if they need to tell someone. Situations may include (but are not limited to):

  • Where there is a risk to you or others
  • Where there have been multiple reports against one person

If you decide to report the incident to the University and/or Police it is very likely that the accused will be informed of the allegation and you will be asked to provide information as part of an official investigation. The SVLO can explain this process to you, and they will support you throughout.
