What types of extenuating circumstances can I apply for if I need an extension for my coursework or exam?
There are two types of extenuating circumstances (ECs) that you can apply for – “self-certified” and “evidence based”.
Self-certified extenuating circumstances
Self-certified ECs are used when you do not have evidence for an evidenced application, but you still have a valid/recognised circumstance that would justify a short extension or deferral of coursework, or deferral of an exam.
You can submit up to three self-certified applications per academic year (one during each academic semester and one during the Late Summer Assessment Period).
More detail is provided in What are self-certified extenuating circumstances (ECs) and how can I apply?
Evidence based extenuating circumstances
Evidenced based extenuating circumstances are used when you have valid evidence to support your application, such as a letter from a GP or medical consultant or an official document relating to the death or severe illness of a family member.
There are no restrictions on the number of evidence based ECs you can submit each semester and they can be used for all types of assessments. They can be submitted before the assessment deadline or event or up to 5 working days afterwards (additional evidence would be required).
