Which parts of my PhD programme are compulsory?

If you are on a Postgraduate Research programme, you must attend the Compulsory Workshops offered by the Doctoral College’s Researcher Development and Employability team.

  • You must attend the ‘Welcome to your Doctorate’ workshop within the first 3 months of beginning your doctorate
  • You must attend the ‘Confirmation Process’ workshop between 2-3 months before your Confirmation. This is usually 6-10 months into a doctorate for most full-time researchers or 21-22 months for part-time researchers
  • You must attend the ‘Viva Examination’ workshop in the final year of your doctoral study. We recommend attendance around 3-6 months before your viva, in order for you to gain maximum benefit from the workshop.

Please enrol via Surrey Self-Service and follow this process.

Please note that there can be compulsory taught modules on some PhD programmes, and it can also be a requirement of the studentship that PGR students attend and take the assessment of modules. PGR students should check their School PGR Handbook and/or terms of conditions of their studentship.
