Why is it necessary for the University to ask about my sex at birth for registration?
The University collects data on all protected characteristics for equality monitoring purposes. Sex is a key demographic variable for statistical insights. Accurate data on student sex is essential for identifying and addressing any potential inequalities or disparities between the sexes in areas such as academic attainment.
We can use this information to identify significant trends within the student community, for example, whether there are any barriers preventing students of a particular sex from accessing services provided by the University.
We also use this data so ensure that the University’s single sex services and resources are allocated correctly, for example, our single sex student accommodation.
We also require this information to be able to provide mandatory data to our regulator, as part of statutory returns and as part of Freedom of Information requests.
