In academic misconduct cases, what are Special Circumstances?
Full details regarding Special Circumstances in academic misconduct cases can usually be found in your invitation letter. Please ensure that you read the letter carefully and comply with any directions and/or deadlines outlined. Any evidence that you wish to be considered for Special Circumstances should be sent to the meeting organiser and clearly marked as ‘Special Circumstances evidence’.
Special Circumstances apply when there is valid evidence documented by a third party to demonstrate that your ability to make a rational choice was impaired at the time that they committed the misconduct.
Valid evidence in relation to Special Circumstances will usually be: a signed and dated letter from a medical practitioner (GP or clinical specialist) that states the dates when the illness affected you and how the circumstances affected your ability to make a rational choice at the time the misconduct took place.
This evidence will be considered in the context of the other available information and on a case-by-case basis.
