Is attendance compulsory?

University regulations require students to participate fully in the work of their programme and attend your timetabled sessions. It is therefore expected that you will attend all lectures, tutorials and seminars that are on your timetable as well as ensuring you participate in assessment.

Not engaging sufficiently in your programme places your educational experience at risk and could lead to your registration being terminated for lack of academic progress. In addition, if you are on a course that has mandatory modules as part of your accreditation, the position has not changed. You are expected to attend these sessions.

If you are studying on a Student or Tier 4 visa or on an accredited course, the University will use data from our MySurrey Attendance (MSA) to monitor engagement as part of our reporting requirements. If you do not check-in, we may be unable to provide accurate data to the relevant regulatory bodies or authorities.

But we want to emphasise that these resources are there to give you useful feedback and allow you to make decisions to give you the best chance of success. If you are feeling anxious about your attendance we would recommend contacting your Personal Tutor or Student Success Coach in the first instance. We understand that occasionally there may be technical issues with logging your attendance on MSA. Isolated cases of attendance being missed would not normally result in any compliance action being taken, provided your overall engagement profile is strong. If you believe your attendance is not being accurately captured by the MSA app, we advise letting your Personal Tutor or Student Success Coach know. They work with our central support teams and can liase with them on your behalf and provide further help or support if needed.
