How can I get more information about the meningitis ‘MenB’ vaccination programme?

As a student at university, you are considered to be at increased risk of meningitis, particularly when starting university for the first time and mixing with large numbers of people in a new social environment. Meningitis can be very dangerous and it is important that you are aware of all of the symptoms so that you are aware of any early signs of the disease and can seek medical treatment as early as possible - infections can get worse and become life threatening very quickly.

The university recommends that all students are vaccinated against all groups of the meningococcal bacteria which can cause meningitis.

• If you are under 25 and and starting university for the first time in autumn 2026, you are eligible for the government’s free MenB vaccination programme. It is likely that you will be contacted by the NHS, via the App, by text, or letter, depending on the contact details the NHS has for you. However, you do not need to wait if you are eligible and can book a free MenB vaccine yourself. If you are a new international student, you are also eligible for the UK vaccination programme

• If you are over 25 or a current university student continuing your studies, you are not eligible for the free vaccination programme, but you can book and pay for this vaccine privately. A variety of pharmacies, travel clinics and private GP practices offer this vaccine. You may wish to seek advice from your GP surgery first

Please also bear in mind that the whole process takes at least six weeks. Two doses are required and they must be given one month apart with the vaccine becoming effective two weeks after the second dose.
