How does the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced disclosure process work for my clinical placement?

If you are undertaking a health sciences placement, you will need to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced check before you start and also sign up for the DBS Update service (for which there is an additional charge). Other placements may require annual statements of fitness to practice and declarations of previous convictions but this will depend on the requirements of the relevant professional organisations.

Health sciences

As part your application to study at the University for courses involving work with children or vulnerable adults you must declare any conviction including those which are spent and including cautions (verbal or written), a warning or reprimand, a bind-over order. A self-declaration will be sought first, and reviewed after interview and prior to any offer. Once you have accepted your offer, you will need to apply for the Adult and Child Workforce Enhanced DBS check (and also sign up to the DBS Update Service).

You will be sent information on how to apply for your online DBS application prior to Welcome Week. You will not be permitted to register for a course requiring a DBS check unless you have completed the application process for the disclosure check. You may be allowed to register pending a satisfactory DBS disclosure but if any information comes to light as a result of this, after registration, the University reserves the right to terminate your registration and require you to to withdraw.

Veterinary medicine

If you are a veterinary student, you will be required to sign an annual online declaration at the start of your programme to confirm that you meet the university and Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons' (RCVS) fitness to practise requirements. You must inform us of any changes or updates to this by contacting the Vet Student Support team.
