I have suffered a bereavement and am finding it difficult to study, can I have extra time to complete coursework or exams?

Grief affects different people in different ways, you may find your studies a vital distraction, or you may find your grief makes it ‘temporarily impossible’ to study. If you find yourself unable to study due to a bereavement of a close relative or significant other you can apply for extenuating circumstances to give yourself more time to complete coursework or to defer an exam. You can do this from Surrey Self-Service.

Self-certified applications (which don’t require evidence) can provide an extension of 5 working days for coursework. You can also use a self-certified application to defer an exam or test to the next available assessment opportunity.

Longer extensions to coursework deadlines of up to 10 working days can be applied for as part of an EC with evidence application but these require evidence, usually in the form of a death certificate.
