I need urgent mental health support
If you, or someone you know, requires emergency support for severe self-harm including self-injury or overdose, please ring the ambulance service on 999, or if you are able to, visit your local Accident and Emergency: for Guildford this is Royal Surrey County Hospital, GU2 7XX (+44 [0]1483 571 122) or you can find your local A&E on the NHS website.
If you are on campus at the time of the serious incident, you can also call Campus Safety on +44 (0) 1483 683 333.
If you have concerns about your mental health please contact your Doctor or use the NHS 111 service for advice. You can either call them directly on 111, or receive online advice for your symptoms on their website.
The Centre for Wellbeing offers a range of pastoral services to ensure that our students feel well and supported throughout their time at the University. We are not a clinical service provider, but offer advice and support for mental, emotional and psychological issues, as well as signposting to clinical services. There are several ways to register with our service to book an appointment:
- Email the centreforwellbeing@surrey.ac.uk for a registration form.
- Phone us on +44 (0) 1483 689 498 to have a registration form emailed to you, leaving a voicemail if you are calling outside of reception hours.
- Complete the online registration form.
All students at the University of Surrey now have access to the Student Assistance Programme (SAP), which provides free 24/7 access to experienced therapists and advisors who can provide support with a range of personal or student-related problems. Additionally there are a range of external providers who you can speak to:
- Wisdom App: All University of Surrey students get free access to Wisdom – a wellbeing app which includes personalised wellbeing content, webinars, health programmes and health coaching. Use our unique University of Surrey code MHA268152 to access.
- Student Space: there is no need to struggle alone. Text 'STUDENT' to 85258 to start a conversation or call 0808 189 5260 to speak to someone between 3pm and midnight, everyday.
- Safe Haven: 101 Walnut Tree Close, Guildford, GU1 4UQ. Open 6pm–11pm, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year, in-person and virtual appointments.
- Samaritans: 116 123 "free any time, any phone" support via phone, email and online.
- Mental Health Crisis Line: Call 0800 915 4644 24-hour NHS support for people in Surrey and North East Hampshire experiencing a mental health crisis.
- Shout: Text 85258 A free UK text service, providing support for issues such as suicidal thoughts, self-harm, bullying or relationship changes. Available 24-hours a day.
- Papyrus HOPELINEUK: a specialist telephone, email and text service giving support, practical advice and information to young people who are feeling unable to cope with life.
