What are your top tips for staying safe at university?
Our top tips for staying safe at university:
- Drink responsibly
- Have the Campus Safety team's contact number on your mobile: +44 (0) 1483 683333
- Use an App to track your location, such as Hollie Guard or Life360.
- Be aware of your surroundings – earphones and phones distract you from what is going on around you
Please come to Campus Safety if you are worried or concerned about yours or someone else’s safety.
It is also important to remember that you are now living in accommodation with a lot of people you do not know, so do not assume you can leave your doors and windows open and everything will be fine. While Guildford and the University is a low crime area, it is not a no crime area.
Safety points to remember are:
- Always lock your bedroom and flat/house door when you are not in and make sure windows are shut and locked. One in three burglaries occur when doors and windows have been left open.
- Keep your keys and room fobs safe and do not give them to anyone else.
- Do not let anyone you do not know follow you in through a secure door.
- Do not leave personal items (like phones, laptops or purses) unattended in communal areas, particularly cafes, bars, the Library or study areas – even if you're just going to be a couple of minutes. That's all it takes.
- If you spot anything suspicious on campus call Campus Safety on +44 (0) 1483 683333, or off campus call the Police (999 Emergency or 101 non-emergency).
