What happens if I get ill at home during Christmas, Easter or summer break but have registered with a GP at university?

If after moving to university you have changed doctors and registered with a GP surgery in Guildford, you may be concerned that if you go home during the university vacation periods, you will not be able to access GP appointments or other medical treatment. However, you will still be able to contact your nearest practice to ask for treatment.

Across the UK, GP surgeries can see you as a temporary resident while you are a student. You can usually:

  • register as a temporary patient for up to 3 months, or

  • receive any immediately necessary treatment for up to 14 days without full registration

You can also use NHS urgent treatment centres for minor injuries and illnesses, such as cuts, sprains, minor burns, and rashes, without needing a GP referral. Please see the latest advice on Getting medical care as a student on the NHS website.
