Can I temporarily withdraw from my course retrospectively?

An application for a backdated temporary withdrawal from your course (if you want to backdate your request to an earlier date in the academic year) will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Before applying for any withdrawal, we strongly advise you to first discuss it with your personal tutor and our MySurrey Hive team, as there may be ways that the University can support you through your course. You can contact the MySurrey Hive via Surrey Support. Please select "My Course" as your enquiry topic. You can also talk to the MySurrey team regarding any questions related to how temporary withdrawal will affect your student loan entitlement, fees and funding, and housing and visa applications.

If you do want to proceed with a ‘backdated’ temporary withdrawal application, log into Surrey Self-Service and select “Extenuating Circumstances” from the top menu. Select “Start new Backdated Temporary Withdrawal” and follow the steps in this process.

Your application will need to include compelling evidence to explain why you did not apply for a withdrawal at the time you originally needed it.

If you are a Tier 4/Student visa/Study Route student, it is highly unlikely that you will have a retrospective withdrawal application accepted. Please contact the MySurrey Hive team via Surrey Support for more information regarding this. Please select "International Advice and Visas" as your enquiry topic.

More information is on our main Withdrawals page.
