I wish to transition or am in the process of transitioning, who do I need to contact within the University?
If you are considering transitioning to a different gender or are in the process of transitioning, you can decide whether you would like to let the university know. However, we recommend that in the first instance, you approach the Centre for Wellbeing, who will be able to provide support and guidance throughout the process of transitioning and beyond.
You can also contact your Personal Tutor or the Student Success and EDI team via email SSEDI@surrey.ac.uk.
Any disclosure that you make to us will be treated as confidential. No one else will be informed until you have been involved in a discussion about who needs to be informed and when and you have given your consent.
A support plan can be put in place to guide you through the process of transitioning. This may include:
outlining any potential periods of absence
making referrals for support
identifying who may need to be informed and whether / how / when you wish for this to happen
making changes to records
the date, if applicable, from which you wish to use a different name or change records
In exceptional circumstances, where the person who you tell is concerned for your safety or that of others, they have a duty to inform relevant bodies. In such instances, disclosure would relate only to concerns about your safety or the safety of others and would not involve any disclosure or breaking of confidentiality regarding your gender identity.
