If my application for extenuating circumstances is still pending at the time of the assessment event/deadline for coursework submission, should I attend the event or submit my work?

If your application for extenuating circumstances (EC) was pending at the time of the assessment event/deadline for coursework submission and later approved by the University:

  • For exams or class tests – if you attended the assessment whilst your EC application was pending, your work will not be marked, and your attempt will be deferred to the next available assessment period.

  • For coursework assignments – if you submitted your assessment within the original deadline whilst your EC application was pending but then had your EC application approved and your deadline extended,  you can submit a new version of your coursework to meet the new deadline. The first submission would then not be marked and would be replaced by the later submission.

If your application for extenuating circumstances was pending at the time of the assessment event/deadline for coursework submission and later rejected by the University:

  • If you attended the assessment event/submitted your coursework, your work will be marked.

  • If you did not submit your work or attend your assessment event, your attempt will be treated as a ‘non-submission’ and may restrict your eligibility for any future compensation on the module. The relevant regulations for non-submission will therefore apply (A0 Regulations for Foundation Year: regulation 73; A1 Regulations for Taught Programmes: regulation 158).

If you prefer, you can withdraw your evidenced extenuating circumstance application (you should be aware that self-certified applications can only be withdrawn before the start of the assessment or submission deadline). If you choose withdraw your evidenced based EC, you should do so as soon as possible and normally no later than the same day as the assessment deadline and you must also provide reasons for why you could not have withdrawn your evidence based EC application before the assessment event/deadline.
