My bike has been stolen on campus, what should I do?
If you have had your bike stolen from a location on the university campus there are a number of things you should do.
Firstly, you should report the theft to the Police as soon as possible. To report a stolen bike to Surrey Police, you can either call the non-emergency number 101 or report it online through the Surrey Police website. Stolen bikes are often recovered in the local area, so acting quickly can really make a difference. By reporting it to Surrey Police, you will also then be given a crime reference number which will help you with any insurance claim.
Secondly please inform the Campus Safety team. Please let the team know the exact location that the bike was left and the time it was last seen and also whether it was locked. Campus Safety may be able to review CCTV footage (retained for up to 30 days). If footage shows the bike being taken, Campus Safety can share it directly with the Police.
Although the university does not provide insurance for bikes parked on the campus or in cycle shelters or racks, you can add them to your own contents insurance policy. There are a number of providers who offer this.
