What happens during the academic misconduct appeals process?
When you have emailed your academic misconduct appeal form, appeal statement and any accompanying evidence to the Office of Student Complaints, Appeals and Regulations (OSCAR), you will receive an acknowledgement email. This email includes answers to some frequently asked questions.
An initial review will then be conducted by an OSCAR Case Manager to determine whether your appeal submission is complete.
If your appeal submission is complete, you will not be contacted.
If your appeal submission is incomplete (for example you have not selected grounds of appeal or documents cannot be opened) or your appeal is related to a situation which the University will not consider (for example it is related to academic judgement), the OSCAR Case Manager will contact you to provide you with the opportunity to respond or source and supply further evidence. You will be provided with a deadline to respond or to submit further evidence to support your case.
An Academic Misconduct Appeal is not a re-hearing of the original case. The decision-makers will only consider whether you have proven on the balance of probabilities that your chosen ground(s) of appeal apply.
Your case will then be allocated to an OSCAR Case Manager, who will compile all relevant information into a dossier of evidence.
If your case was reviewed by the Academic Administration team or considered at a Formal Discussion, your case will be considered at an Academic Misconduct Appeal Review. You would not be invited to the review.
If your case was considered at an Academic Misconduct Panel hearing, your appeal will be considered at an Academic Misconduct Appeal Panel hearing. You would be invited to the Panel hearing.
Ensuring that your appeal submission includes the following items will ensure that your case is considered as quickly as possible:
