What is the Turing Scheme?

The Turing Scheme is the UK government’s global programme to study and work abroad. The scheme provides funding for international opportunities in education and training across the world. The Turing Scheme provides grants which do not need to be paid back by students. Turing funding is awarded to universities annually for projects running between 1 September to 31 August. Surrey applies for funding in Spring and the outcome is received in the summer.

If you want to apply for a Turing Scheme Grant, there are two methods of applying, depending on whether you are planning to study or work abroad.

If you are planning to study abroad, and have received an offer of a place on a study exchange with one of our partner universities, you are automatically considered for a Turing Scheme Grant, and do not need to make an additional application. Grant availability is dependent on the outcome of Surrey's application for funding.

If you are planning to work abroad and have secured a work placement, you need to register your placement with the International Engagement Office by completing the placement form. For details on how to register, please visit our Sharepoint pages. By registering your placement, you will be automatically considered for a grant, and you will not need to make an additional application for the Turing Scheme Grant. Students who have registered placements with the International Engagement Office will be contacted by the IEO regarding the Turing Scheme and being awarded funding. Grant availability is dependent on the outcome of Surrey's application for funding.
